Bye Bye Spotify

Bye Bye Spotify

I been using Spotify for years. I started out with the free tier, but after the annoying adverts I went all in. I always found a way to justify the cost, "I always use spotify", "I listen to a lot of music", "I discover a lot of great artists". Seeing the £11.99 leaving my account every month is something I can over look, but seeing it all added up put it into perspective. So I value my overall experience at £657.38 over the life time of the subscription? No.

I am a man of habit, I listen to the same music, the same artists, the same of everything. So I decided to host my own music. Starting out with seeing what the actual cost of a mp3 is these days, because I'm not buying CDs and going through the hassle of ripping the mp3 from the CD and throwing it at my server.

Picking a music steamer thing was the easy part. I use coolify as my PaaS, it comes with built in services and Navidrome happen to be one of them. So it was a simple click and deploy.

Once deployed, it was a simple case of heading over to Amazon and buying my first mp3. It was 99p, "Imagine Dragon - Follow You" from the album "LA Live" or something like that.

Once the song was on my computer, it was a simple case of copying over to the server. Or in my case using Secure copy protocol (SCP) to copy the file from my local machine to the server. I got AI to write a powershell script to get all mp3 files and transfer to the server.

Now I can stream that mp3 from my desktop, latop and phone ❤️

Android Apps

I been looking at android apps, there are a lot of free and open source apps. But they all seem a bit feature less or buggy. I found Symfonium mentioned online, I gave that ago and it works a treat. It's not a free app but at £4.99 for a one time purchase, you can't really go wrong
